Operator launch + tested đź‘€

I couldn't help but get it (circumvented EU regulatory constraints)

I stayed awake a long time yesterday as OpenAI did a live stream of their first AI Agent launch! Watching it felt exciting but underwhelming at the same time.

But I am convinced… I’ll unpack in a second.

Plus, [DEMO] Never Mediocre UI Design Again → 21st.dev + Cursor AI Agent.

OpenAI’s first version of their AI Agent called Operator

Last night, I was extremely hyped about OAI’s Operator. 2 months after “leaking“ that information (I suspect them leaking it on purpose and creating hype around their products), they released it in the US and elsewhere. Unfortunately, not in the EU.

One starts to get used to late access to cutting-edge tech in the EU.

Mini digression - apologies

I love Europe, I love Germany. My Family and friends are here, and the places, culture, food, cities, etc. .. are soo beautiful!

However, for decades, we have driven an anti-innovation strategy in the EU.

I like to cite the fact that 16 years ago, the US and the EU had roughly the same market capitalization; today, it is more than 2:1.

While others innovate, the EU regulates. We have the EU AI Act, but no strong AI contenders. (Aleph Alpha, for instance, gave up on building internationally competing AI because it was a losing battle.)

The EU’s response? More regulation: Digital Fairness Act.

And risk capital? Nowhere to be seen. (There’s a factor 10 in favor of US investments, according to the EU Parliament. Other sources report even worse figures.)

There are another 100 things I could mention and where this will lead us. Let me know if you are interested in a dedicated episode.

Back to OpenAI’s Operator - What is it?

A collaborative setting with four individuals sitting at a desk, working together on a laptop. The screen displays the workflow of the Operator AI assistant booking a dinner reservation via OpenTable. The left panel outlines the AI’s step-by-step actions, such as: • Accessing OpenTable’s website. • Searching for a restaurant named “Beretta.” • Selecting “San Francisco Bay Area” as the location. The main screen shows the OpenTable webpage with a dropdown menu for selecting regions and a “Find a table” button. The right-side interface highlights the progress of the AI tool, and the text at the bottom mentions that the Operator retains screenshots for transparency. The setting includes a modern shelf background with decorative items, providing a casual yet professional workspace.

It is an AI agent that automates web tasks like reservations, shopping, and expense filing. The underlying model is CUA (Computer-Using Agent) model, it combines advanced reasoning with vision capabilities to interact with interfaces.

With user control features and partnerships with services like Instacart and Uber, Operator is available as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S., streamlining task automation.

Seeing these initial partnerships gave me a sour feeling, perceiving it as limited to ordering food etc.

But then, I stumbled upon first user trials shared on X. My favorites:

  1. Automate tweeting (could even be a whole strategy → write content once, distribute it multiple times)

  1. Massive outreach via LinkedIn

Others give it research tasks (“find the cheapest health insurance in Switzerland”), writing book recommendations on amazon, and much more.

Maybe not the first version, but consecutive versions of it (and think all their competition) will be able to perform ALL tasks that a digital EA can do. 100% of the tasks.

I believe companies like Athena are cooked.👩‍🍳

In the midst of all of these examples, more and more ideas came up for me. AND I thought F***K IT! ➡️ I got a VPN and purchased ChatGPT Pro 🧨🤣 Let’s dance!

A browser window showing the interface of an AI assistant tool called “Operator.” The header features the tool’s minimalist logo and a text input bar that reads, “What can I help you do?” Below are categorized options for user requests, including “Dining & Events,” “Delivery,” “Local Services,” “Shopping,” and “Travel.” Under the “Dining & Events” category, example queries are displayed, such as: • “Find a restaurant with a great happy hour for next Wed for 6 people” (powered by OpenTable). • “Book a table for 2 at a romantic French bistro tomorrow night at 8 PM.” • “Find a sushi restaurant with high ratings with reservations tonight for 2.” In the bottom-left corner, a live video feed of a man speaking is visible, likely providing a tutorial or overview of the tool. The browser tabs and desktop menu bar are visible at the top of the screen.

PLUS, I got access to SORA v2!

A user interface showcasing a video platform’s “Featured” tab. The screen displays a grid of vibrant, high-quality video thumbnails arranged in a 3x3 layout. The thumbnails include: • A field of blooming red roses. • A robotic hand holding a glowing blue rose. • A woman wearing a veil with floral patterns. • Skyscrapers viewed from below, with birds flying in the sky. • A metallic abstract art piece with liquid bubbles and a reflection of a forest inside a sphere. • A bustling urban street scene with people crossing the road amidst traffic. • A royal figure dressed in elaborate historical attire in a grand palace. • An elderly person dancing with a child in a cozy kitchen. • A historical marketplace scene with people and vendors in traditional clothing. The left sidebar has navigation options like “Featured,” “Recent,” “Likes,” and “Library” folders. The bottom menu offers video aspect ratios, resolutions (720p), duration options (5 seconds), and a “Storyboard” button.

It is Christmas again. ❤️
