15 Helpful Rules of Vibe Coding with Cursor

A directionally helpful rule of thumb to get a good outcome working with Cursor’s AI Agent.

Alt text: A white poster titled “15 Rules of Vibe Coding” in bold, followed by a numbered list of coding guidelines. Each item is a short paragraph explaining a key principle: 1. Start from a template: Begin by cloning a template (e.g., from GitHub) to quickly set up a Next.js app with AI features and authentication (link to a GitHub repo provided). 2. Use agent mode: Leverage Cursor’s agent mode (rather than normal mode) to create, edit, and manage files through natural language commands. 3. Use Perplexity: Open docs and APIs from the web stack, specifying the new feature you want, and receive both instructions and code examples. 4. Create new tasks in Composer: For each separate task, open a new Composer chat. Keep these agent chats short. 5. Run locally first: Use built-in servers to test the app locally for errors or breakages. 6. Iterate and refine: Embrace rapid iteration—don’t aim for perfect design at first; improve step by step. 7. Collaborate with your team: Use Wiki/Sidebar for quicker input and brainstorming. 8. Clone remote work wisely: Start from GitHub templates, push changes often, and maintain synergy. 9. Code in short cycles: Keep tasks small, code incrementally, and fix issues promptly. 10. Document as you go: Maintain thorough documentation and signpost changes for clarity. 11. Focus on user experience: Prioritize end users in all design decisions. 12. Check logs for errors: Regularly review logs or console messages to ensure smooth operation. 13. Keep code DRY: Avoid duplicate code to maintain clarity and consistency. 14. Versioning is key: Commit early, commit often, and use clear commit messages. 15. Ship quickly: Deploy frequently, gather feedback, and refine in short, iterative cycles. The background is plain, with no additional graphics or images, emphasizing the text content.

I also feel that the output of Cursor is getting better and better partly because of Cursor's development velocity. You can partially even let it run into its problems, and it will solve its errors.
