👷 The Truth Behind AI Job Automation

So, I started writing for this episode on one of the topics I have always wanted to discuss: AI’s impact on jobs and future implications.

Then, midway through, I got an email that the podcast with GTwTP was ready. I watched it, and I liked it; cool. I put it in my episode.

Then Runway did a number on me by announcing their video generation model Gen-3; I eagerly awaited this.

Well, this is included at the bottom (I’ll maybe do a deep dive on video gen, LMK, if you’d appreciate it). The result of all of this is that it’s past midnight. Grazie! 🫠 ..

👷 The Truth Behind AI Job Automation

Jobs have never been more subject to change than today.

Whether you're just starting your career or already established, the personal implications of job automation are impossible to ignore.

It’s crucial to assess the long-term viability of your chosen profession.

We will see job terminations, the emergence of new jobs, and the transformation of existing jobs.

Going forward, we will see AI augmenting jobs, AI automating jobs (with human supervision), and AI completely removing the human in the loop.

Augmentation, automation, and elimination (of human involvement in a role).

Following these stages, some jobs will transform faster, some slower, and some might jump straight to elimination.

It is, as always, nuanced. What jobs are future-proof? Which aren’t? What differentiates us from software (+ hardware)?

Which jobs are future-proof?

The US Career Institute projects the top 65 jobs. See the top 10 above.

Going through it, the jobs least likely to be automated include:

  • Medical and health professionals

  • Engineering and science professionals

  • Arts and sports professionals

  • Education and administration professionals

  • Law enforcement and public safety professionals

  • Trades and technical professionals

Which jobs are more likely to be automated?

There are trends already happening, like self-driving cars, and near-term trends, like AI sales calls (we are working on a project about this right now—reply to this email if you want to know more).

This makes it evident that the demand for taxi drivers will shrink (long-term: no fatigue, 24/7, cheaper, better driver), among other similar trends.

All trends should be considered.

In my book, I included a test page where you can type in an occupation. It will provide you with an automation risk based on job difficulty, user votes, and more. (Source)

What skills are essential for future roles?

These roles require human touch, empathy, creativity, specialized knowledge, and personalized care or services.

Complex decision-making, interpretation of unique situations, and human judgment that machines struggle to replicate will be needed.

However, what AI and robots can do past 2030 is impossible to predict.

But then, what are the potential jobs of the future?

This is my list of upcoming new job roles.
